Keystone Foundation
A nonprofit organisation based in Kotagiri, Tamil Nadu, Keystone Foundation has been working since 1993 to empower indigenous communities in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and beyond. With a deep commitment to ecological balance and the well-being of local people, Keystone follows an eco-development approach that harmonises natural resource conservation with sustainable livelihoods.
The foundation supports indigenous groups by strengthening people’s institutions such as farmers’ collectives, water user groups, and forest rights committees. It focuses on improving livelihood security, food and agriculture stability, community and land rights, health, and biodiversity conservation. Keystone’s work spans over nine states and more than 350 villages, impacting over 16 indigenous communities.
Keystone integrates traditional ecological knowledge with innovative socio-economic practices to foster socio-ecological resilience. Its holistic model addresses challenges related to conservation, rural development, and enterprise generation, nurturing local empowerment through capacity building and advocacy. An important aspect of Keystone’s work is its social enterprise, Last Forest, which markets sustainably harvested forest products, providing fair trade opportunities for local producers.
