Mahila Housing Trust (MHT)
The Mahila Housing Trust (MHT) is improving urban built environments in poor communities through collective action. Since our establishment in 1994, we have mobilized women to exercise their civic rights and empowered them to take charge of their habitat improvement process. By forging unique relationships with poor communities and local governments, we have advanced access to basic services, promoted climate resilience, and deepened participatory governance.
Role
To bridge the gap between grassroots evidence and government policy. You will support our senior leadership in identifying policy priorities and engaging with government officials and partners to create long-term systemic change for urban poor communities.
Responsibilities
- Study and improve MHT’s current policy engagement strategies on urban development issues.
- Lead research and partnership agendas that align with the organization's strategic goals.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with government departments, NGOs, think tanks, and media groups.
- Draft professional policy papers, briefings, and position statements for senior management.
- Turn field research into clear evidence that can influence government decision-making.
- Collaborate with the communications team to share policy insights through social media and public dialogues.
- Represent the organization at conferences and high-level meetings to advocate for the rights of urban poor women.
Requirements
- A Master’s degree in Public Policy, Economics, Development Studies, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of experience in social research or public policy work.
- A deep understanding of India’s urban policy landscape, including housing, climate change, and sanitation.
- Strong networking skills with a proven ability to talk to government officials and various stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to turn technical data into simple, persuasive language.
- Proficiency in standard office software for report writing and data presentation.
- A respectful and collaborative attitude toward grassroots teams and local community knowledge.
- Availability for a time commitment of 8–10 days per month.
