Bhumi is a trailblazer in India’s non-profit landscape, harnessing the energy and idealism of youth to drive transformative change in education and beyond. Founded in 2006 by a group of friends in Chennai, Bhumi was born from a simple yet powerful belief: every child, regardless of background, deserves access to quality education and opportunities to thrive. Today, Bhumi has grown into one of the country’s largest independent youth volunteer organisations, with a presence in over a dozen Indian cities.

The heart of Bhumi’s mission lies in its education programs, which reach thousands of underprivileged children in orphanages, slum communities, and low-income schools. Through its flagship initiatives, such as Ignite and the Bhumi Fellowship, the organisation delivers supplementary education in English, Mathematics, Science, Robotics, and Life Skills, all powered by the dedication of trained volunteers. The Bhumi Fellowship, in particular, is a two-year, full-time programme that places passionate young leaders in government and low-income schools to drive whole-school transformation—focusing on teacher development, leadership, and student outcomes.
Bhumi’s impact, however, extends beyond the classroom. The organisation’s Catalyse initiative mobilises volunteers for civic projects in areas like environmental conservation, animal welfare, and community health, fostering a culture of active citizenship and social responsibility. Over the years, Bhumi has engaged more than 2,00,000 volunteers and positively impacted the lives of over 1,50,000 children and youth.
What sets Bhumi apart is its culture—a blend of ownership, innovation, and nurturing care. Team members are encouraged to take initiative, collaborate across functions, and approach challenges with empathy and a growth mindset. Bhumi’s transparent, impact-driven approach has earned it accolades and recognition, including awards for volunteer engagement and social innovation.
