Citizen Digital Foundation (CDF) is a nonprofit organization working to make technology safer, more responsible, and truly beneficial for everyone in India. Founded in 2021 and based in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, CDF responds to the urgent need for digital literacy and responsible innovation in a country where more than half the population is now online. As digital platforms become central to work, learning, and daily life, CDF steps in to address the risks—like misinformation, privacy breaches, digital addiction, cyberbullying, and the mental health effects of online life—while also helping people make the most of the opportunities technology offers.
CDF’s mission is to promote safe and responsible navigation and innovation in the digital ecosystem. The organization believes that every Indian deserves to use the internet and digital tools safely and to their advantage. To make this a reality, CDF runs digital and media literacy workshops, creates awareness campaigns, and advocates for responsible tech and AI practices. Their work targets students, parents, educators, policymakers, businesses, and anyone interested in building a healthier digital environment.
One of CDF’s flagship initiatives is Litt, an online information literacy platform that helps people of all ages develop the skills to spot misinformation, protect their privacy, and make informed choices online. Through Litt and other programs, CDF empowers individuals to understand the risks and rewards of digital life, fostering critical thinking and digital citizenship.

CDF is also active in tech policy and advocacy. The foundation collaborates with organizations like Pacta, Civis, and Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies to support public consultations and shape important digital rights legislation, such as India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act. By bringing citizen voices into policy discussions, CDF helps ensure that India’s digital future is shaped by the needs and concerns of its people—not just big tech companies.
Recognizing that children, teens, and vulnerable groups are often most at risk online, CDF pays special attention to issues like cyber bullying, digital distraction, and the mental health impacts of social media. Their workshops for parents and teachers offer practical strategies for building safe, healthy digital habits and open conversations about online risks.
CDF is incubated at NSRCEL, IIM Bangalore, and supported by a network of partners and advisors committed to responsible tech. The foundation’s co-founder, Nidhi Sudhan, is recognized among the 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics™ 2024, reflecting CDF’s leadership in ethical technology and digital rights.

For anyone who cares about the future of technology in India, Citizen Digital Foundation offers a space to learn, collaborate, and help create a digital ecosystem that is safe, inclusive, and empowering.
