Role

Epoch AI is looking for a Data Lead who can help shape and maintain the backbone of their research: high-quality, well-documented, and reliable datasets.

This is not a standard engineering job. The team is small, interdisciplinary, and highly collaborative. As Data Lead, you’ll work directly with researchers, bringing rigour and structure to how they collect, clean, store, and share data.

Responsibilities

• Designing and managing long-term data collection pipelines
• Working with researchers to understand their needs and co-develop strategies
• Handling everything from scraping and parsing data to verifying and documenting it
• Maintaining transparency and reproducibility throughout the process
• Owning the technical infrastructure for datasets (scripting, storage, backups, versioning, etc.)

Requirements

This role is a good fit for someone who:

• Is skilled at collecting and cleaning messy data from diverse sources
• Understands how to document and communicate data decisions
• Enjoys writing maintainable code (especially in Python)
• Has worked in a research or non-profit setting—or is interested in mission-driven work
• Is comfortable working independently in a remote team

You don’t need to be a formal “data scientist,” but strong fundamentals in programming, scripting, and data wrangling are expected.
