Are you a design researcher at the start of your career, eager to delve into critical environmental concerns? The Design Researchers in Residence programme, hosted by Future Observatory at the Design Museum, is now open for applications. This year, we’re exploring the theme ‘Artificial’, with a focus on pushing the boundaries of human-centric design in our complex, more-than-human world.
What is the Programme About?
The residency is a unique opportunity for four emerging design researchers to develop independent projects over eight months, from October 2024 to June 2025.
The programme is centred around the question: What are the limits of human-centric design in a more-than-human world?
The Design Museum will host these projects, allowing the public to engage with live design research that challenges traditional notions of what is natural versus what is artificial.
Why Should You Apply?
- Funding: Each selected resident receives a £6,000 commissioning budget and an £11,400 bursary to support their work.
- Resources: Enjoy access to studio space at the Design Museum and benefit from a structured programme of mentorship, training, and seminars with experts from various fields.
- Exposure: Your work will be featured in a free display at the Design Museum from June 2025 to September 2025, alongside an accompanying print catalogue.
Who Should Apply?
We’re looking for designers and researchers from diverse disciplines such as architecture, fashion, digital culture, critical theory, product design, graphic design, interaction design, system design, material studies, and design history. If your work questions the boundaries between the human and the natural, collaborates with non-human species, or reimagines our relationship with the environment, we want to hear from you.
How to Apply
- To apply, download and carefully read the Call for Entries document before filling out the Application Form.
- All applications must be submitted to artificial@designmuseum.org by 9:00 am (UK time) on Monday, 23rd September 2024.
Don’t miss this chance to contribute to a vital conversation on the future of design in a changing world. Apply now and join us in exploring the ‘Artificial’.
