Durga

Durga

Durga is a dynamic citizen-sector initiative with a bold vision: to reclaim public spaces for women, girls, and all those who have been marginalized or made to feel unsafe. Founded in 2013 as part of the I’m Every Woman Trust, Durga works at the intersection of gender justice, public space equity, and community mobilisation. The organization believes that safety and freedom in public spaces are not privileges, but rights that every person should enjoy—regardless of gender.

Durga’s work is rooted in the idea that reclaiming public spaces is not just about physical presence, but also about raising voices, taking action, and building collective ownership. Over the years, Durga has reached more than 36,000 people and nurtured nearly 6,000 active bystanders, empowering them to challenge harassment, speak up, and support those in need. Their programmes go beyond awareness—they create real, lasting change by equipping women and girls with the confidence and skills to assert their rights, while also engaging boys and men as allies in the fight for gender justice.

Durga’s initiatives span workshops, campaigns, and partnerships with schools, colleges, workplaces, and government bodies. The organization’s team is passionate about fostering conversations that break the silence around harassment and encourage everyone to take responsibility for safer, more inclusive communities. By focusing on education, community engagement, and policy advocacy, Durga is helping to shift social norms and inspire a culture of active bystander intervention.

Durga’s impact is felt not just in numbers, but in the stories of women and girls who find their voices, the men and boys who become allies, and the communities that come together to say “enough” to harassment and exclusion. By joining Durga, you become part of a movement that is changing the way public spaces are experienced and shared.
