Epoch AI is a nonprofit global research institute investigating trends in AI development—such as the latest compute advances, data scarcity, and model progress—to build public-facing databases and dashboards. Their mission is to help society and policymakers grasp AI’s evolution.

This ‘Expression of Interest’ invites candidates with diverse backgrounds to shape the Data Lead role around their strengths.

Responsibilities

• Dataset leadership: Develop schema and systematic pipelines from scratch—identifying new AI model data, hardware, datacenter info, etc.  
• Data stewardship: Ensure accuracy, completeness, and ongoing update of datasets that power Epoch’s website tools and visualisations.  
• Documentation & processes: Transform ad‑hoc data flows into robust, repeatable systems with clear documentation and quality control.  
• Contractor management: Recruit, onboard, and oversee data contractors for manual tasks—ensuring alignment with project goals.  
• AI-driven pipelines: Build and maintain LLM‑assisted data pipelines for efficient data collection—balancing automation with accuracy.  

Requirements

• Detail-oriented and systematic—committed to building scalable, error-resistant systems.
• Proactive and dependable—owning and driving projects to successful delivery.
• Experienced in data-led projects—such as data engineering, data products, or data science (5+ years preferred).
• Technically adept—quick learner, able to collaborate deeply with researchers and engineers.(If you don’t meet all criteria but are strong in some, you’re encouraged to apply.)
