At the heart of Bengaluru’s lively museum district stands the Museum of Art & Photography (MAP), a space that celebrates South Asia’s diverse visual culture while embracing the possibilities of a digitally connected world. Spanning 44,000 square feet and designed by the acclaimed firm Matthew & Ghosh, MAP’s five-storey building on Kasturba Road is more than just a museum—it’s an experience. Inside, visitors can explore state-of-the-art galleries, a dedicated research library, an auditorium for performances and talks, an education centre for learners of all ages, and even a café where conversations about art thrive.
MAP’s collection is both vast and varied—over 60,000 works ranging from 10th-century artefacts to contemporary photography and design. From living traditions and textiles to pop culture and modern masterpieces, the museum reflects the depth and diversity of South Asian creativity. Accessibility is more than a policy here; it’s a practice. MAP is committed to ensuring that people of all abilities can connect with art, using adaptive technology and inclusive design.

Interestingly, MAP’s opening chapter was digital. Launched online in December 2020, amid the height of the pandemic, it became India’s first digital-first museum. It drew audiences into its collection through virtual exhibitions, insightful essays, engaging talks by industry leaders, and collaborations with international institutions. Today, that digital spirit still shapes the visitor experience—be it through interactive displays, immersive installations, or e-publications.
MAP is also deeply invested in education. Its programs cater to both children and adults, encouraging exploration, creativity, and a deeper understanding of cultural heritage. Exhibitions like VISIBLE/INVISIBLE: Representation of Women in Art provoke thought, while interactive spaces, such as hologram displays and the kaleidoscope room, invite playful discovery.
As a meeting point for tradition and innovation, MAP is building a bridge between South Asia’s rich cultural past and its dynamic present. It’s a place where art is not only seen but also felt, discussed, and shared. For those who love stories told through images, objects, and design, MAP offers a world that’s both deeply local and globally relevant.
