Reading Himalaya

Reading Himalaya is an all-women-led independent research and policy consultancy dedicated to the society, environment, and development of the Eastern Himalayan region. Founded by researchers from Sikkim, Darjeeling, and Kalimpong, the organisation is deeply committed to producing research that is not only academically rigorous, but also socially relevant and accessible to the communities it serves.

At Reading Himalaya, the belief is that the best social science research should be methodologically sound, socially-driven, and able to inform real change. The consultancy offers a comprehensive suite of research services, from conceptualising and designing projects, through fieldwork and data collection, to analysis and actionable policy recommendations. Their expertise spans sectors such as education, youth engagement, environment, and development, ensuring that their work addresses both current and emerging challenges in the region.

A core part of Reading Himalaya’s mission is to bridge the gap between research and practice. The organisation works closely with local partners, such as the Eastern Himalayan Foundation, to conduct baseline surveys, policy studies, and community engagement initiatives. By combining local knowledge with research training and experience, Reading Himalaya provides high-quality, independent research and policy support tailored to the specific needs of each project.

Reading Himalaya is also passionate about building research capacity in the region. The team recognises that many local researchers struggle to find sustainable careers and adequate training in research publication and practice. To address this, Reading Himalaya creates space and opportunities for emerging scholars to engage in meaningful research, build their skills, and contribute to knowledge production in and about the Eastern Himalaya.

The organisation’s approach is collaborative and inclusive, encouraging participation from researchers across the region and beyond. Reading Himalaya regularly organises workshops, training sessions, and opportunities for young scholars to learn and grow. Their work is underpinned by a commitment to equity, social justice, and the empowerment of local communities.
