Better Cotton
A global force for change in the cotton sector, Better Cotton champions sustainable farming and improved livelihoods for millions. Founded just over 15 years ago, the organisation has already transformed the industry by supporting more than 2 million farmers across 23 countries, making up over a fifth of the world’s cotton production. Their mission is simple yet powerful: to help cotton communities thrive while protecting and restoring the environment.

At the heart of Better Cotton’s work is a commitment to making cotton farming fairer, safer, and more sustainable. They provide knowledge, resources, and support to farmers, enabling them to grow cotton using better techniques that benefit both people and the planet. Their approach goes beyond farming practices, tackling issues like gender equality, fair working conditions, and climate resilience.
Better Cotton’s impact is felt at every stage of the supply chain, from smallholder farmers to global brands. By setting high standards and verifying progress, they ensure that cotton is not only grown responsibly but also traced transparently. Their collaborative network spans over 2,700 members worldwide, including producers, manufacturers, retailers, and civil society groups.
With a bold vision for 2030—cutting greenhouse gas emissions, reducing synthetic pesticide use, improving soil health, and empowering women—Better Cotton is leading the way to a more ethical, regenerative future for cotton. Their work proves that sustainability, profitability, and social progress can go hand in hand.
Role
Better Cotton runs a capacity strengthening programme through field-level partners (Programme Partners or PPs) who help farmers adopt the Better Cotton Standard System (BCSS). To monitor and support these PPs, Better Cotton has developed a Partner Performance Monitoring Tool using Microsoft Excel as the backend and Power BI for KPI visualisation.
The current system has limitations in:
- Data entry complexity – Manual entry in a 30-sheet Excel file, requiring contributors with different skill levels.
- Scalability constraints – Designed for 60 KPIs, but needs flexibility for an evolving set of indicators.
- Customisation needs – Some KPIs must be tailored for specific countries or partners.
- Multi-partner input – Currently supports around 45 partners, with numbers changing periodically.
