Room to Read
Room to Read is a global non-profit working to ensure that children in low-income communities develop the literacy skills and life skills they need to thrive. Founded in 2000, the organisation works across two core areas: teaching children to read and supporting girls to stay in school and build confidence in their own futures.
On the literacy side, Room to Read trains educators, creates locally relevant books and learning materials, and strengthens the reading environments in schools. The goal is not just to get children reading, but to build a genuine love of reading. On the gender equality side, the organisation runs a life skills programme that equips girls with the tools to make decisions about their own education, health, and wellbeing. This work happens in and out of the classroom, through trained social mobilisers and community networks.
Room to Read does not simply build schools and walk away. It works directly with governments and education systems to embed its approaches so that the impact continues long after its programmes end. Over 25 years, the organisation has reached more than 52 million children across 29 countries, with plans to double that reach over the next three years.

Scale that is hard to find elsewhere. Room to Read has reached over 52 million children across 29 countries since 2000. That kind of reach is rare in the non-profit world, and it means the work being done here has genuine, documented impact. Evidence matters here. Room to Read invests seriously in measuring what works. Grade 2 children in Room to Read schools read more than twice as many words per minute as children in comparison schools. Staff work in an organisation that takes results seriously. Global reach, local roots. Teams are based in the countries where programmes run, including India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Tanzania, Rwanda, and more. Roles are grounded in real communities, not managed remotely from headquarters. A 25-year track record of financial credibility. The organisation has deployed more than US$1 billion into education, holds 18 consecutive four-star ratings from Charity Navigator, and is trusted by major institutional donors worldwide. Staff work in a stable, well-governed organisation. Dual focus on literacy and gender equality. For anyone who cares about both issues, Room to Read is one of the few organisations in the world doing rigorous, large-scale work on both simultaneously and treating them as connected rather than separate.
