By working closely with village communities, FES helps local people manage their own "commons"—the shared resources they depend on. Today, they support over 36,000 village institutions across 12 states, helping millions of people lead more sustainable lives while protecting the environment.
Role
The Senior Program Manager (Communications) is a strategic leadership role focused on telling the story of community-led conservation. The goal is to turn complex field insights into powerful narratives that engage everyone from rural villagers to national policymakers, ensuring that the importance of shared natural resources is understood and valued across India.
Responsibilities
- Create and lead a communication strategy that highlights community-led governance and the "Promise of Commons."
- Manage the organization’s storytelling efforts, including social media, websites, blogs, and high-impact campaigns.
- Build strong relationships with media houses, NGOs, and partners to increase the visibility of FES’s mission.
- Oversee the production of high-quality content like op-eds, videos, and visual designs by managing internal teams and external vendors.
- Lead internal communications to ensure all staff across different states stay connected and aligned with the organization's goals.
- Provide guidance for high-stakes events and launches, ensuring all messaging is consistent and professional.
Requirements
- Postgraduate degree in Communications, Development Studies, Journalism, Public Policy, or a related field.
- 12–15 years of total experience in communications, with at least 5 years specifically in the development sector. Experience in natural resource management or rural livelihoods is a plus.
- Strong editorial judgment, project management skills, and the ability to manage creative vendors or agencies.
- Exceptional storytelling and writing abilities, leadership experience in managing teams, and deep empathy for community voices.
- A strategic thinker who is collaborative, curious, and grounded in values of equity and ecological justice.
