The Antara Foundation

Public health in India is a story of vast potential often met with the challenge of delivery. At the heart of this narrative sits The Antara Foundation, an organization built on a singular, powerful belief that every mother and each child deserves an equal start to a healthy life. Founded in 2013 by Ashok Alexander, a former Director at McKinsey and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the organization emerged from a desire to take proven health solutions and implement them at a scale that truly matters.

The foundation operates with a clear philosophy that they call the "scale mindset." Instead of creating parallel systems that compete with state infrastructure, they work directly within the existing public health framework. They partner with state governments to strengthen the capabilities of the people who matter most: the frontline health workers. In the vast rural landscapes of states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh, these workers are the lifeline for millions.

A cornerstone of their work is the "AAA" model. In every village, three key women drive the health ecosystem: the Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA), the Anganwadi Worker, and the Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM). Historically, these women worked in silos, often duplicating efforts or missing critical data. The Antara Foundation introduced platforms to bring these three distinct roles together, transforming them into a cohesive team. By equipping them with data, simplified tools, and better training, they ensure that high risk pregnancies are identified early and that children receive the nutrition and care they need.

The impact of this approach is visible in the numbers and the stories from the field. From identifying high risk pregnancies to ensuring safe institutional deliveries, the foundation has touched the lives of millions of women and children across thousands of villages. Their interventions also focus on the "Nurse Mentoring" program, where skilled mentors work alongside government nurses in labour rooms to improve safety and hygiene during childbirth.

Working at The Antara Foundation means embracing a culture of "dirt under the fingernails." It is a place for those who are willing to travel the last mile, listen to the community, and work with humility. The team combines the analytical rigour of the private sector with the empathy required for social development.
