The Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN) is a UK-based charity that supports grassroots conservation leaders across the Global South, including Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Since its founding in 1993, WFN has channelled over £24 million to more than 220 conservationists working in around 80 countries. These leaders focus on protecting wildlife, restoring landscapes, and empowering local communities to live in balance with nature.
At the heart of WFN’s work is the Whitley Awards, often referred to as the “Green Oscars.” Each year, these awards recognise and provide substantial funding to proven conservationists, helping them scale up their initiatives. Beyond financial support, WFN equips its awardees with training, mentorship, and international visibility, enabling them to strengthen their impact and reach new partners, media, and decision-makers.
WFN’s vision is of a future where communities and wildlife thrive together on a healthy planet. Its mission is to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by putting local people at the centre of conservation efforts. The organisation is committed to integrity, transparency, and accountability, while ensuring its work is evidence-based, collaborative, and ambitious in scope.
Over the last three decades, WFN has built a strong reputation for celebrating conservation success stories and championing local leaders who work tirelessly for nature. With the support of its patrons and ambassadors, it continues to pioneer grassroots funding that makes a lasting difference for both people and the planet.
