About

Anugyalaya is a registered non-profit and the development apostolate arm of the Darjeeling Diocese, working across Darjeeling, Kurseong, Kalimpong, and Sikkim. Registered in 2001 under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act, the organisation grew out of Seva Kendra, the Diocese's original social service centre, following a territorial bifurcation of dioceses in the region. Anugyalaya has impacted over 25,000 young people through direct work focused on child welfare, livelihoods, and community development in the Eastern Himalayan belt. anugyalaya1 (1).jpg

Key programmes include:

Child Rights and Protection: Anugyalaya runs initiatives grounded in the principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, working to protect and support vulnerable children and youth, including children of daily wage workers.

Sustainable Livelihoods: The organisation works to improve livelihood options for marginalised farming communities through sustainable agriculture, non-timber forest produce such as bamboo, medicinal and aromatic plants, and village tourism. This includes training in fruit crop planting, pest management, and pruning.

WADI Development: A model orchard development programme adapted from a NABARD initiative originating in Gujarat, currently active across 500 tribal villages in Gorubathan Block, Kalimpong district.

Disaster Risk Reduction: Anugyalaya implements community-based disaster preparedness and adaptation work, helping vulnerable communities build resilience to climate and disaster-related shocks.

Scheme for Adolescent Girls (SAG-KP): A targeted programme supporting adolescent girls in Gorubathan Block, Kalimpong district, run with support from the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India.

Education: Anugyalaya runs small-scale schools for underprivileged children and youth from daily wage worker families, providing access to basic education otherwise out of reach for these communities.

Anugyalaya's work spans Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts of West Bengal and North Sikkim, supported by partners including Deutscher Caritas Verband and the Government of India. Roles here are suited to professionals who want to work closely with marginalised hill and tribal communities in the Eastern Himalayas, contributing to grassroots development across child protection, livelihoods, and disaster resilience.
