Coal India Limited (CIL)
About
Coal India Limited is India's largest coal mining company and a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Coal, Government of India. Headquartered in Kolkata, CIL accounts for over 80% of India's domestic coal production and operates through eight subsidiary companies across major coal-bearing states. It is one of the largest corporate employers in the country, with operations spanning Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, and other mining regions.
While CIL is a commercial enterprise, its scale of operations places it among India's largest CSR spenders among public sector undertakings. CIL and its subsidiaries spent Rs 735 crores on CSR activities in 2024-25, channelled into education, healthcare, skill development, women's empowerment, and community welfare in and around its mining communities.

CSR focus areas include:
NIRMAN (Noble Initiative for Rewarding Mains Aspirants of National Civil Services Examination): A flagship CSR programme that provides financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh each to candidates from CIL's mining states who clear the UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination. The initiative aims to support aspirants from underserved regions in preparing for the Mains and Interview stages. In the 2024 cycle, 66 candidates were supported, of whom 6 were finally selected by UPSC, all of them women.
Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana (TBSY): A CSR initiative supporting children with thalassemia and aplastic anaemia by funding bone marrow transplants at identified hospitals, providing a critical lifeline to families in coal mining regions.
Community Development and Infrastructure: CIL has a long-standing community development policy covering education, healthcare, drinking water, and local infrastructure within an 8 km radius of its project sites, complementing government welfare delivery in these areas.
Skill Development and Livelihood: CIL's CSR programmes include vocational training and livelihood support for women and youth in mining-affected communities, aligned with national skilling priorities.
Roles in Coal India's CSR vertical are suited to professionals who want to work on social programmes at significant scale, with the backing of one of India's largest public sector organisations.
