Need Base India

Need Base India is a nonprofit founded in December 2009 that works with vulnerable children, youth and women in Karnataka. It began by rescuing 10 vulnerable children in Koppal and now runs residential care homes in Bengaluru alongside education, skilling, health and environment programmes in rural districts. Its stated mission is to empower vulnerable children, youth and women through holistic education, skill development, healthcare and livelihood opportunities, to foster resilient and inclusive communities, and to promote environmental responsibility and social equity. The organisation describes its approach as staying with a rescued child until that child is self-sufficient, rather than ending support at a fixed age. Much of its work is delivered inside government school premises and in partnership with other NGOs and corporate CSR funders.

Major Initiatives and Programmes

• Children Care Homes: Residential homes in Bengaluru, run within government school premises, providing shelter, school enrolment, health care and life skills.

• Online Digital Classroom: Live interactive classes in mathematics, science and English plus life skills and digital literacy for classes 5 to 7, run with e-Vidyaloka across 27 centres in Koppal, Raichur and Yadagiri districts of North Karnataka.

• Youth Icon Program: Support for young adults aged 18 and above who have left residential care after Class XII, covering course admissions and fees, life skills, Aadhaar, voter ID and driving licence documentation, monthly stipends and housing, and placement support.

• Digital Literacy: A six month course per batch for children and youth from marginalised communities, running from basic computer and internet skills through digital security and online collaboration to programming fundamentals, graphic design, digital marketing and entrepreneurship, delivered across three centres in Bangalore and Koppal.

• Tailoring: A three month course for rural women covering sewing technique, hand embroidery, pattern making, garment construction, patchwork, quilting and cutting.

• Menstrual Hygiene Management Initiative: Awareness sessions, sanitary product supply, health check ups and pad disposal machines in schools in rural Chitradurga.

The care homes are the centre of the organisation's work, and most other programmes connect back to them. Children enter through rescue or referral, live in a home while attending the government school on whose premises the home sits, and can then move into the Youth Icon Program for continued education and employment support after Class XII. Because the homes operate inside school premises, the organisation also invests in the schools themselves, including digitised classrooms and clean toilets.

Impact

Need Base India states that its care homes support more than 546 children, that 71 students have settled into independent lives since 2009 and 114 are currently enrolled in diploma, degree or professional education, that over 6,000 students from 25 schools have taken part in its digital classroom programme, that 8,717 students across four Karnataka districts received learning materials, that 3,623 students across eight Bengaluru schools were reached through health camps with free treatment through M. S. Ramaiah Hospital, Saptagiri Hospital and KLE Hospital, that 136 children and youth have completed digital literacy training since 2023 with 62 currently enrolled, and that 66 women have completed the tailoring course and are earning a livelihood

Working here means direct, in-person work with children and young adults in residential care, and with rural communities in some of Karnataka's most under-resourced districts. The programme range is wide for an organisation of this size, so staff get exposure across child protection casework, government school partnerships, vocational training delivery and corporate CSR relationships rather than a single narrow function. It suits people who want long-term relationships with the people they serve, are comfortable working inside government systems and hostel settings, and are willing to be based in or travel between Bengaluru and rural North Karnataka.
