Pratham International
About
Pratham International is a US 501(c)(3) entity within the wider Pratham network, focused on education and youth training initiatives globally. It carries forward Pratham's original mission, born in India as "Every Child in School and Learning Well," and works to help every child and youth reach their full potential, now across 20+ countries.
Pratham is best known for pioneering two major global innovations: ASER (Annual Status of Education Report), a citizen-led education assessment movement, and Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL), an evidence-based approach to improving foundational learning. These innovations, developed and refined in India, began expanding internationally as early as 2009. Launched formally in 2023, Pratham International's role is to help local communities, NGOs, and governments adapt and implement these solutions in their own contexts worldwide.
Major Initiatives & Programmes
Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL): Pratham's flagship, evidence-based pedagogy for foundational literacy and numeracy, now adapted and implemented across Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and South Asia.
Assessments for Action: Programming built around using large-scale, citizen-led assessments (in the spirit of ASER) to drive education reform.
Early Years Education: Programming focused on foundational learning in the earliest years of a child's education.
Youth Training: Skilling and livelihood-oriented training programmes for young people. Digital Initiatives: Technology-driven learning tools, including a newly announced partnership with Anthropic to build AI-powered learning tools for learners.
TaRL Africa Partnerships: Active country partnerships across Zambia, Kenya, Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, Uganda, South Africa, Cameroon, Niger, Madagascar, Botswana, Namibia, The Gambia, Angola, and Somaliland.
Global TaRL Partnerships beyond Africa: Active work in the Philippines, El Salvador, Guatemala, Pakistan, Morocco, Brazil, Egypt, Colombia, and Nepal.
Impact
- Programming support across 20+ countries and multiple languages
- A top-5 finalist position in the MacArthur Foundation's 100&Change competition for TaRL's methodology
- Recently marked 30 years of the broader Pratham network's work in education
- Deep bench of proven, research-backed interventions (TaRL, ASER) that have already demonstrated impact at scale in India before international adaptation
Pratham International gives people the chance to work on globally recognised, evidence-based education interventions rather than start from an unproven idea. Because the organisation's core innovations were already tested and refined at massive scale in India, the international work is about thoughtful adaptation and local partnership building, which appeals to people who want rigor and impact without reinventing the wheel each time. Being part of a wider six-country Pratham network (India, UK, USA, Australia, Sweden, plus international) also means access to a large, well-established global community of educators and practitioners.
Pratham International suits people passionate about foundational literacy and numeracy, who enjoy cross-cultural, cross-country collaboration and want to help take proven education solutions to new geographies.
