SMART (Seeking Modern Applications for Real Transformation)
About
SMART is a New Delhi-based non-profit registered in 1997 under the Societies Registration Act. It works with vulnerable communities, with a particular focus on women, using both new and traditional communication technologies to democratize access to information. Its mission centres on eradicating poverty through gender equality, improved family health, environmental protection, and greater democratic participation of minorities and marginalised groups.
SMART's flagship approach combines community radio with sustained, on-ground community engagement, and narrowcasting for reaching people in places radio signals can't. This community-owned model, where the community itself runs the radio station, has become central to how SMART builds trust and long-term credibility in the regions it works in.
Major Areas of Work
-
Community Radio & Information Access: Running community radio stations that give listeners practical information on rights, government schemes, and development programmes to improve access to health, education, and governance.
-
Women's Rights & Empowerment: Building awareness and capacity among women and vulnerable groups to help them speak up for their entitlements, including financial literacy and inclusion work.
-
Civic Education & Democratic Participation: Using games, radio, and on-ground engagement to build civic awareness and encourage democratic participation, particularly among younger audiences.
-
Health & Family Welfare: Delivering awareness and behaviour-change content on health, nutrition, and family welfare through radio and narrowcasting.
-
Environmental Awareness: Covering climate change and local environmental issues through community journalism and reporting.
Major Initiatives & Programmes
-
Radio Mewat: SMART's flagship community radio station in Nuh (formerly Mewat), Haryana, one of India's most backward districts, reaching over 550,000 people across 165+ villages through 12-hour daily broadcasts.
-
Civic Games Lab: A "games for social change" initiative building civic education through games rooted in Indian narratives, characters, and design, including the board game The Poll, which simulates Indian electoral politics.
-
The Radio Festival: India's first festival celebrating radio across all its forms, public, private, community, and independent podcasting.
-
Financial Literacy & Inclusion Programme: On-ground work in Mewat surveying and supporting women's access to business loans and formal banking, addressing deep-rooted fear and mistrust of the banking system.
-
COVID-19 Response: A multi-pronged pandemic response including an information and awareness campaign in Mewat, a mask-making initiative, and providing COVID-related content to community radio stations across India.
-
AKP (Archana Kapoor Productions): SMART's associated production house, with over 300 documentaries and films made for the Government of India, Doordarshan, and international bodies.

- Featured in the Limca Book of Records for the highest number of calls received by a radio-run consumer helpline

SMART offers a distinctive niche in the social sector: using media, especially community radio, as the primary tool for grassroots empowerment rather than just direct service delivery. People are drawn to its award-winning, deeply embedded model in Mewat, where nearly three decades of trust-building have made the radio station a genuinely community-owned institution. It also suits people interested in creative, unconventional approaches to social change, from civic education games to a full production house making documentaries and films.
SMART suits people interested in media, communication, and grassroots community engagement who want to work on women's empowerment and civic participation through storytelling and on-ground trust-building, rather than a purely programme-delivery model.
