Women's Organization for Rural Development (WORD India)

Women's Organization for Rural Development (WORD India) is a Namakkal-based non-profit working since 1991 to empower women, children, senior citizens, and marginalised communities across rural Tamil Nadu. Operating from Paramathi Velur, Namakkal, WORD India takes an integrated community development approach spanning education, healthcare, skill development, HIV/AIDS care, environmental conservation, sanitation, and social justice. Over three decades, it has formed 311 self-help groups, constructed 1,000 toilets, supported 304 students through scholarships, provided care to 255 children living with HIV, and reached 1,950 families during COVID-19.

Key programmes include:

Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs): WORD India has formed and strengthened 311 women's SHGs across rural Tamil Nadu, promoting financial independence, collective savings, bank linkages, entrepreneurship, and community leadership among marginalised women. Skill Development: Vocational training centres in tailoring, embroidery, and Ari work equip rural women and youth with practical skills and livelihood pathways, with a focus on economic self-reliance and dignified employment.

My Dream Scholarship Programme: A scholarship initiative supporting children from vulnerable families and truck driver communities to continue school, college, and higher education.

HIV/AIDS Prevention, Care & Nutritional Support: WORD India runs awareness campaigns, counselling services, and nutritional support for individuals and children affected by HIV/AIDS in rural communities, working to reduce stigma and improve health outcomes. Senior Care: WORD India currently shelters and supports 29 elderly residents through its senior care programme, providing nutrition, healthcare, counselling, and emotional wellbeing support to vulnerable senior citizens.

Sanitation: WORD India has constructed over 1,000 toilets across rural communities, addressing a foundational barrier to health, dignity, and girls' school retention.

After-School Support: The organisation runs after-school programmes for children from underserved families, complementing formal education with additional learning support. WORD India is a strong fit for professionals who want to work in deep rural Tamil Nadu, contributing to multi-sector grassroots programmes backed by over three decades of community trust and presence.
