Leadership for Equity

Leadership for Equity (LFE) is a non-profit based in Pune that works to make India's public schools stronger, so that every child learns and thrives. LFE works with state and district governments in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Haryana to improve how teachers teach and to build lasting support for them inside the government system. Its work includes creating good learning materials, training teachers, coaching the officers who mentor teachers, and using data to guide decisions. LFE also uses simple technology, such as a classroom observation app and a WhatsApp chatbot that sends teachers useful resources. This role sits within LFE's District Transformation Program, which helps teachers in Zilla Parishad schools across five districts in Maharashtra improve how children learn to read, write and do basic maths.

Role

The Academic Associate will help teachers across assigned blocks teach early reading and maths better. You will lead and coach a team of Academic Coordinators, set up demonstration classrooms that show good teaching in action, and train teachers and government officials through live demonstrations. You will use classroom visits, teacher feedback and programme data to see what is working and where more help is needed. You will report to the Senior Academic Associate or Project Manager, and the Academic Coordinators will report to you.

Responsibilities

  • Plan monthly and quarterly work with clear goals for better teaching and classrooms, then track progress and make sure agreed actions are finished on time.
  • Lead a team of Academic Coordinators, set clear expectations for school visits, observations, coaching and reporting, and help them solve problems in the field.
  • Build demonstration classrooms, model good early reading and maths teaching yourself, and write down which practices are working.
  • Observe classrooms alongside Academic Coordinators and Kendra Pramukhs, choose 2-3 focus practices for each teacher, and check that feedback is being used in later visits.
  • Coach and mentor Academic Coordinators through modelling, practice, shadowing and regular feedback, and encourage the team to learn from each other.
  • Plan and run training for teachers and middle managers at block and cluster level, with strong demonstrations and hands-on practice, and improve each session based on feedback.
  • Work with Kendra Pramukhs, BEOs, Extension Officers and Headmasters to arrange dates, school access and participation, hold joint reviews, and follow up on action points.
  • Track coverage and changes in teaching practice, check that team data is complete and accurate, and share regular updates on progress, gaps and support needed.

Requirements

  • 2-3 years of experience in early reading and maths (FLN), education, teacher training or running education programmes.
  • Experience working directly with government school teachers in Maharashtra through teaching, FLN support, classroom observation, coaching or demonstration lessons.
  • Experience running teacher training or managing or mentoring a small field team.
  • Strong reading, writing and speaking skills in Marathi, with working knowledge of English.
  • A D.Ed., B.Ed. or MA in Education is highly desirable.
  • Experience observing classrooms and giving teachers clear feedback is highly desirable, and experience with Kendra Pramukhs, BRCs/CRCs, Head Teachers or DIET faculty is a plus.
  • Ability to plan and track work across many schools and blocks, read programme data, and write clear notes on field visits and progress.
  • Based in Palghar, Maharashtra, with frequent travel to schools, clusters and Panchayat Samitis, and a valid two-wheeler licence and access to a two-wheeler.

Benefits

  • Annual pay of ₹4-6 lakh CTC, depending on experience, qualifications and fit for the role.
  • A chance to improve learning for children in government schools across a whole district.
  • Hands-on growth in coaching, training and team leadership, with support from an experienced programme team.
  • An equal opportunity workplace where applications from LGBTQIA+ candidates and persons with disabilities are given priority.
