Room to Read works to end illiteracy and gender inequality so that every child has the chance to read, learn, and grow. It trains teachers in early grade literacy, creates children's books in local languages, and builds school and home libraries. Its Gender Equality Programme helps adolescent girls build life skills and make informed decisions about their futures. Room to Read has supported more than 50 million children across 28 countries since it was founded in 2000.
Role
A field-based role supporting Social Mobilizers and Program Facilitators to help girls stay in school and build essential life skills. The Associate reports to the Program Officer and manages a team of Social Mobilizers and a Program Administrative Assistant, working closely with communities, schools, and government officials to strengthen the Girls' Education Program.
Responsibilities
- Support and mentor Social Mobilizers in planning and running life skills sessions for girls
- Help identify and support girls at risk of dropping out of school
- Lead review meetings to solve challenges faced by Social Mobilizers in the field
- Support training sessions for Social Mobilizers and build capacity of partner staff
- Conduct life skills sessions directly with girls on topics like health and career planning
- Lead parents' workshops and meetings, and share scholarship and entitlement information with families
- Build relationships with school staff, government officials, and like-minded organizations
- Create safety nets for girls through school and community protection committees
- Track program quality and share feedback with Social Mobilizers and Program Facilitators
- Maintain accurate program data and enter it into Room to Read's database
- Manage program expenses and complete financial reporting on time
- Document case studies, best practices, and lessons learned
- Support annual planning, budgeting, and proposal drafting
- Oversee the work of the Program Assistant and guide field teams
- Write four case studies a year documenting programme impact and learnings
Requirements
- Master's degree in education, social work, development, or gender studies
- 3-5 years of relevant work experience in girls' education, gender, or life skills
- Experience working with or counseling adolescent girls
- Prior experience in facilitation or training
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team
- Basic computer skills
- Strong organizational and planning skills to track program progress
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and take initiative
- Fluency in the local language spoken by the girls in the program
- Experience living or working in rural or semi-urban areas is an advantage
- Familiarity with gender issues, girls' education, or community development is an advantage
