Associate Program Manager – Student Counselor in Hyderabad and Bengaluru | Avanti Fellows
Avanti Fellows
Avanti Fellows is an Indian education nonprofit that works with students from low-income families, helping them reach college and build a career from there. Its programmes combine teaching, mentoring and long-term support, so a student is not left alone at the points where people usually drop out. The organisation works alongside colleges, faculty and volunteer mentors rather than replacing them. The aim is a stronger pathway from school into work for students who would otherwise have to find that path by themselves. This role sits within Avanti Fellows' college student programme, which supports students through their academic and career journey.

Role
As an Associate Program Manager for student counselling, you will look after an assigned group of college students and stay with them through their studies and their early career decisions. You will get to know each student well enough to notice when something is going wrong, and act on it early. Much of the work is steady relationship building through calls, visits and conversations, backed by careful records of how each student is doing.
Responsibilities
- Build strong, trusting relationships with an assigned cohort of college students.
- Hold regular calls and meetings with each student in your cohort.
- Track student engagement across the programme and keep records current.
- Follow each student's academic progress through the year.
- Support students in setting and working towards their development goals.
- Identify challenges a student is facing, in studies or outside them.
- Provide timely support or step in with an intervention when a student needs one.
- Coordinate with mentors so students get the guidance they need.
- Work with college faculty and internal programme teams on student support.
- Conduct college visits to meet students where they study.
- Run student outreach and engagement sessions.
- Maintain clear documentation of student interactions and follow-ups.
Requirements
- 2 to 4 years of experience in student counselling, mentoring, education, youth development or a related field.
- Experience supporting young people over a sustained period, not one-off interactions.
- Strong communication skills, in person and over the phone.
- Empathy, and the patience to build trust with students slowly.
- Relationship-building skills with students, mentors and faculty alike.
- Problem-solving skills for the practical difficulties students bring to you.
- Ability to manage many students, competing priorities and open follow-ups at once.
- Comfort with data tracking and keeping accurate records.
- Comfort with written documentation as part of everyday work.
- Willingness to travel to colleges for visits and engagement sessions.
- Kannada-speaking ability is mandatory for the Bengaluru location.
- Based in, or willing to move to, Hyderabad or Bengaluru.
Benefits
- Work in a mission-driven team focused on student outcomes.
- Direct, visible impact on the academic, career and personal growth of the students you support.
- Close working relationships with colleges, mentors and programme teams across the sector.
