Better Cotton Initiative is a global not-for-profit organisation working to make cotton farming fairer and more sustainable at the farm level. It brings together farmers, partners, governments and brands to set standards and to grow both the supply of and demand for more sustainable cotton, from the field to the finished garment. In fifteen years it has brought more than a fifth of the world's cotton in line with its standard and helped farming families and their communities do better. This role sits within Better Cotton Initiative's India Programme function, which works hand in hand with local programme partners to put these goals into practice on the ground.

Role
The Consultant, Climate Change and Natural Resource Management, is a maternity cover position that carries forward the work of building climate action into Better Cotton Initiative's India programmes. Working closely with programme partners, the Consultant will strengthen their skills in climate-smart farming, help deliver carbon related initiatives, and support better implementation of Better Cotton Initiative's Principles and Criteria version 3.2. The aim is simple: climate work that is grounded in evidence, useful to partners and shaped by the realities of the villages where cotton is grown.
Responsibilities
- Support programme partners in delivering projects based on Payment for Ecosystem Services, guided by the Senior Climate Change and Natural Resource Management Coordinator.
- Plan, coordinate and deliver climate related capacity strengthening activities such as workshops, trainings and partner meetings.
- Develop high quality climate change materials for programme partners, including tools, training courses, guidelines, modules and research products.
- Coordinate practical technical research into climate risks and vulnerabilities in project areas, and help partners build the findings into their programmes.
- Lead the design and build the technical skills of programme partners in using geospatial technology in their project work.
- Support partners in shaping climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies that match Better Cotton Initiative India's goals.
- Help partners find meaningful ways to involve village communities in climate action that also supports their social and economic development.
- Identify climate-smart agriculture and natural resource management techniques that suit local conditions, and help partners put them into practice.
- Encourage partners to keep improving their field level performance, their capacity strengthening programmes, and their monitoring and evaluation of both.
- Work with partners to spot the barriers farmers face in adopting sustainable practices, and to find and apply solutions.
- Monitor outcomes and impact linked to climate mitigation and adaptation, and help communicate progress and challenges inside and outside the organisation.
- Prepare case studies, success stories and reports on the India programme, and support cross-functional work with other teams.
Requirements
- Master's degree in a relevant field such as Climate Change, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Sciences or Soil Science.
- Minimum 5 years of work experience in a related sector.
- At least 2 years of that experience working with grassroots organisations and rural communities.
- Proven ability to manage or assist practical action-oriented research among rural communities.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate several projects involving many external stakeholders and internal teams.
- Strong grounding in using data and field evidence to make decisions.
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills, with the ability to work well with very different groups of people.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with an understanding of behaviour change and the ability to influence it.
- Proven ability to work productively in remote teams and in fast-paced multicultural settings.
- Excellent IT skills including MS Office.
- Experience working with international non-profit organisations, and prior experience in the cotton or wider agriculture sector.
- Willingness and ability to travel regularly within India and occasionally abroad, up to 25 percent of the time.
- Desirable: experience applying remote sensing and GIS to climate, agriculture or natural resource management work.
- Desirable: experience with Payment for Ecosystem Services work, including carbon credit projects, carbon markets or other nature based financial incentives for farmers and communities.
