Role

As Coordinator – Agroforestry, you will help farmers in the hills of Karbi Anglong move toward farming that mixes trees, plantation crops and horticulture. Many farmers here practise jhum (shifting cultivation), and the models you build must fit their land, their customs and their needs. You will set up nurseries, choose the right native trees and crops, study markets for rubber, bamboo and fruit, and work closely with the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, research partners and farmer groups to make the work last.

Responsibilities

  • Design agroforestry models for hilly and jhum-affected lands, blending native trees, plantation crops, horticulture, and silviculture practices.
  • Oversee site selection, phased implementation, and nursery operations, ensuring quality seedling sourcing for species like rubber and bamboo.
  • Conduct market and supply chain analyses for key crops to address smallholder selling bottlenecks and select viable village-level options.
  • Partner with Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, KVKs, government bodies, and local farmer groups to drive community-led adoption.
  • Track project timelines, budgets, nursery yields, and farmer uptake while contributing to donor reports and coordinating with WWF-India's Delhi office.

Requirements

  • 5 to 7 years of relevant experience in agroforestry design, nursery management, and upland/jhum farming systems.
  • Strong technical expertise in native tree assessment, silviculture, horticulture, and agricultural supply chain analysis.
  • Proven track record in stakeholder management with autonomous councils, government agencies, research institutions, and indigenous communities.
  • Solid project management, budgeting, and reporting skills, with cultural sensitivity and willingness to travel extensively across Assam (especially Karbi Anglong).

Benefits

  • Work with one of India's leading conservation organisations on farming that protects both land and livelihoods.
  • Build field experience in agroforestry, nurseries and crop markets in Northeast India.
  • Work alongside the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, research organisations, KVKs and farmer groups.
  • Get regular technical and strategic input from the WWF-India Delhi office.
