Room to Read works to end illiteracy and gender inequality so that every child has the chance to read, learn, and grow. It trains teachers in early grade literacy, creates children's books in local languages, and builds school and home libraries. Role
A government-facing role placed within SCERT, reporting to the District Lead. The District Academic Coordinator will strengthen teacher capacity-building and support Jharkhand's Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) and Quality Education goals, working closely with SCERT, the State Project Management Unit, DIETs, and district officials to design training and support teachers on the ground.
Responsibilities
- Help design and adapt training modules for teachers and education functionaries in line with the state's FLN roadmap
- Develop session plans, facilitation guides, and training resources with subject experts and government partners
- Update training content based on field feedback and monitoring data
- Coordinate with SCERT on training plans and support creation of e-content for platforms like NISHTHA and DIKSHA
- Work with DIETs, Block Resource Persons, and schools to support FLN implementation
- Plan and run district and block level activities like teacher training and community engagement sessions
- Lead and support coordination and review meetings with SCERT
- Support partnerships with district and state education officials to build consensus on FLN goals
- Help ensure effective use of teaching and learning materials by teachers and students
- Contribute academic expertise on foundational literacy to shape training and classroom practices
- Facilitate training sessions for teachers and education functionaries
- Assess teacher training needs and help design capacity-building plans
- Mentor block and cluster level officials to support consistent teacher training
- Support development of ongoing professional development systems for teachers
- Take on other tasks as assigned within Room to Read's broader programme work
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in any discipline; a B.Ed. or specialized degree in Education is an advantage
- 2-3 years of professional experience in the development sector, especially in government engagement
- At least 1 year of relevant experience in school education or large-scale education projects
- Proven experience working with government stakeholders at the district or block level
- Ability to analyze data and turn it into useful insights for planning and decision-making
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in Hindi, with good English proficiency
- Ability to work well with multiple stakeholders, adapt to changing situations, and travel frequently to blocks and districts
- Must be legally eligible to work in India; Room to Read cannot provide sponsorship
- Willingness to follow Room to Read's Child Protection Policy, Code of Conduct, and PSEA (Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) Policy, as this is a child-facing role
