Tattle Civic Tech is a community of technologists, researchers, and artists working toward a healthier online information ecosystem in India. Founded in 2019, Tattle builds open-source tools and datasets to understand and respond to misinformation on chat apps and social media platforms. Its work includes building scrapers to source content from WhatsApp and other platforms, using machine learning to categorise multilingual and multimedia content, and making fact-checked information accessible to mobile-first audiences across India. All of Tattle's code is open-source and licensed under GPL.
Role
You will build robust software tools and contribute to socio-technical research on misinformation in India. This is a technically deep role that also requires intellectual curiosity about the social and political dimensions of technology, making it a strong fit for someone who sits at the intersection of engineering and research.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain fullstack software tools that support misinformation research and response efforts in India
- Develop and integrate scrapers for sourcing content from chat apps and social media platforms
- Work with machine learning pipelines to categorise and classify multilingual and multimedia content
- Integrate new APIs and work with cloud infrastructure as needed
- Read, engage with, and contribute to socio-technical research including academic papers in economics, political economy, and science and technology studies
- Mentor others in the organisation and learn from the broader team Contribute to open-source software and help maintain Tattle's public codebase
Requirements
- 2 to 5 years of experience in fullstack software engineering
- Proficiency in Elixir, Python, and Javascript
- Comfortable working with Linux and cloud service providers such as AWS
- Experience integrating APIs and an appreciation for low-level implementation details, algorithms, and data structures
- Prior contribution to open-source software in any form
- Ability to read and engage with formal, quantitative, or computationally grounded social science research
- Comfortable reading academic papers in economics, political economy, or science and technology studies
- Curious, eager to experiment with new technologies, and open to learning from the team
- Based in India and comfortable working fully remotely and asynchronously
