India Water Portal (IWP) has been documenting India's water realities since 2007. It serves as a knowledge platform for water practitioners, researchers, journalists, policymakers, and citizens. Over the years, IWP has published articles, research papers, interviews, multimedia stories, and field reports contributed by more than 12,500 contributors in English and Hindi. The fellowship supports independent storytellers in uncovering water stories from across India, particularly from regions and communities underrepresented in mainstream narratives.
Role
Document and share compelling stories on water across India through written or visual formats. Fellows will work independently from their chosen regions, with editorial support and mentorship from the IWP team. The fellowship seeks fresh, local perspectives that can deepen public understanding of water issues.
Two tracks are available. Applicants must choose one:
Track 1: Written Storytelling Fellowship (6 fellows, 3 in English and 3 in Hindi). Expected output: 14 to 16 pieces over six months including articles, photo essays, and interviews.
Track 2: Visual Storytelling Fellowship (4 fellows). Expected output: 12 to 15 video stories and reports over six months including field reports, community stories, interviews, and short-form digital video content. English subtitles required for all final video outputs.
Responsibilities
- Report and produce water-related stories from across India with a focus on underrepresented communities and geographies
- Develop a mix of story formats as per the chosen track, including articles, photo essays, interviews, or video reports
- Work with the IWP editorial team to develop and refine story ideas
- Deliver outputs consistently over the six-month fellowship period
- Collaborate with IWP for translation, subtitling, or adaptation of content where needed
Requirements
- Open to storytellers, journalists, filmmakers, content creators, researchers, and communication professionals from across India
- Strong interest in water, environment, rural development, climate, livelihoods, or related themes
- Prior experience in journalism, video reporting, or content creation is desirable but not mandatory
- Strong connections to the regions you wish to cover and interest in reporting from underrepresented communities
- Commitment to thoughtful, impactful, and community-centred storytelling
- For the Visual Storytelling track: ability to produce English subtitles for all video outputs
