Azim Premji Foundation

azim1 (1).jpg Azim Premji Foundation works to build a fair, humane and sustainable society in India. It does this in two ways: by running its own programmes with government schools and public systems, and by making grants to civil society organisations doing serious work on the ground. Its grants support partners across many themes, from education and livelihoods to health and the rights of vulnerable communities. The Foundation has recently begun focused work in Mumbai and Pune and is setting up a team based out of Mumbai. This role sits within the Foundation's Grants unit, which assesses organisations, makes grants, and supports partners until the work reaches the people it is meant to reach.

Role

The Programme Manager leads grant making and grant management for the Foundation's new work in Mumbai and Pune, and supports partner organisations to reach their programme outcomes. The work covers all the themes within the Foundation's purview. Alongside grant making, the Foundation implements programmes in close collaboration with civil society organisations on the ground, and this role helps lead that work.

Responsibilities

  • Assess organisations across thematic areas and make large, high-impact grants.
  • Oversee the management of assigned grants, including timely reporting and payment disbursement.
  • Review the quality of programmes and how well they are being implemented.
  • Build relationships with civil society organisations and other stakeholders to deepen the Foundation's understanding of different themes and local contexts.
  • Support research and the development of frameworks and models for the areas the Foundation works in.
  • Lead or support the Foundation's own initiatives in Mumbai and Pune, working with implementing partners so programme outcomes are met.
  • Strengthen ground level operations with partners, improving their systems, processes and ownership of the work.
  • Support partners on team building, stakeholder engagement and collaborations with other organisations.
  • Make considered changes to programme design where the work on the ground calls for it.
  • Identify unaddressed issues in the community or gaps in implementation, and act on them through partner feedback, layering and deepening the work.
  • Update internal leadership every quarter on programme progress, challenges and changes seen on the ground.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 12 to 15 years of experience in the social sector.
  • Good understanding and experience of urban issues and vulnerabilities, preferably in Mumbai or a similar urban context.
  • Substantial knowledge of organisational and project management.
  • Experience of grant making or grant management, including reporting and disbursement.
  • Ability to assess organisations and judge the quality of their programmes.
  • Ability to build and hold long term relationships with civil society organisations and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and solve problems independently or with others as needed.
  • A high level of self-motivation, initiative and creativity.
  • Willingness to travel extensively for work.
  • fluency in English, Hindi and preferably Marathi.

Benefits

  • Work with a foundation with a long record of serious, patient work in India.
  • Shape a new team and a new body of urban work from its early days.
  • Decide and manage large grants that reach communities directly.
  • Work closely with strong civil society organisations across many themes.
  • Direct access to internal leadership through quarterly reviews of your work.
