Portfolio Manager in New Delhi | Girls Not Brides
Girls Not Brides
Girls Not Brides is a global partnership working to end child marriage so that every girl can shape her own future. Since 2011 it has brought together more than 1,400 organisations in nearly 100 countries, all working towards one goal: to stop child, early and forced marriages and unions everywhere. The partnership wants a world where girls in all their diversity decide if, when and whom to marry, and where their rights and futures are fully real. In 2025, 1 in 5 girls were married under the age of 18, and by 2030 Girls Not Brides will contribute to bringing that down to 1 in 7 by moving international actors to commit money and action, and by driving collective work in ten focus countries. This role sits within Girls Not Brides' Impact and Strategy Performance team, which makes sure the organisation delivers well on what it has promised its funders and can show the results.

Role
The Portfolio Manager builds and runs a single, shared way of managing donor grants from start to finish. The donor funding portfolio has grown in size and complexity, and it needs steady coordination, strong financial oversight and high quality reporting across many teams. Working with staff who manage projects and with colleagues who manage sub-grants to members, this role keeps activities, timelines, budgets and reporting needs lined up so delivery runs smoothly and everyone knows what they own. It reports to the Head of Impact and Strategy Performance.
Responsibilities
- Maintain an organisation-wide view of the donor funding portfolio, with clear sight of projects, timelines, requirements and how they depend on each other.
- Lead the development of one shared coordination and accountability model for donor funded grants, setting standards, roles and ways of working across the grant lifecycle.
- Promote consistent grant management practice across teams, allowing for different delivery models and different levels of grant complexity.
- Work with colleagues who manage projects and sub-grants so donor requirements and sub-granting processes stay aligned.
- Support project staff and budget holders to track progress against agreed objectives, timelines, KPIs and budgets.
- Provide hands-on coordination for complex, multi-team grants that have no single project manager, pulling together inputs, sequencing activities and surfacing dependencies.
- Apply a lighter quality assurance touch to narrower grants that already have one clear project manager.
- Spot delivery problems early and bring teams together to keep grant commitments on track.
- Clarify financial requirements and timelines for budget holders, and flag financial risks or variances in good time.
- Coordinate donor reporting, leading consolidation and drafting for complex grants and reviewing the rest for quality.
- Work with Development and Finance teams so everyone shares the same understanding of donor compliance and reporting expectations.
- Keep strong documentation and audit-ready files, and support due diligence processes and donor audits.
- Strengthen grant management systems, tools, templates and workflows, and build staff capacity in project management practice and collaboration tools such as Monday.com.
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience managing complex, multi-grant portfolios in international development or a similar setting, including coordinating delivery across several teams and ideally several countries.
- Proven experience running portfolios with several grants at once, typically three or more, with responsibility for tracking budgets of around £1 million or more, along with timelines and deliverables.
- Proven experience in grant portfolio management and donor reporting, including gathering inputs and deliverables from cross-functional teams.
- Familiarity with project or portfolio management methods and systems, or practical experience applying structured approaches to coordinating several projects.
- Strong ability to hold and make sense of portfolio-level information: grant requirements, timelines, reporting obligations and budgets across many projects.
- Strong communication skills, able to turn donor requirements and compliance expectations into clear, practical guidance colleagues can act on.
- Proven ability to build effective working relationships across Programme, Finance, Fundraising, MEAL and Operations teams in a matrixed organisation.
- Strong understanding of donor compliance and reporting standards, and how these differ between funding types and donors.
- Experience using portfolio or project management tools such as Monday.com or SharePoint to support coordination and visibility across teams.
- Able to work independently and proactively, with close attention to detail and confidence handling competing priorities.
- Collaborative team player with an inclusive and respectful way of working with others.
- Experience working in international and diverse environments, including working remotely and across time zones.
- The right to work in India at the time of applying and for the full 18 months of the contract.
- Willingness to travel internationally on occasion, and to work outside normal hours now and then so teams in different time zones can meet.
- Any offer may be subject to a satisfactory background check and criminal records check, which can include an overseas police record check, a Disclosure and Barring Service check or an international criminal record check.
Benefits
- A fixed term contract of 18 months in a global partnership working to end child marriage.
- Competitive benefits under the Girls Not Brides Global Pay and Benefits policy, with payment made in local currency.
- Hybrid and home working arrangements.
- A central role with visibility across the whole organisation and close work with Programmes, Finance, Fundraising, MEAL and Operations.
- Work in a genuinely international team across nearly 100 countries.
- An equal opportunities employer committed to building a staff body with a range of backgrounds, perspectives and skills.
