With a team of 500+ members and a presence across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, SNEHA has directly reached over 6,20,000 women, children, and healthcare workers since 2016. Its work spans maternal health, adolescent wellbeing, gender-based violence prevention, and community health partnerships.
Role
The Program Officer - Counselling screens adolescents in schools, communities and health posts for mental health concerns, and plans and delivers the right support for them. The role also strengthens everyone around the young person: teachers, parents, health-post and ICDS staff, and the non-specialist workers who deliver counselling on the ground. Alongside direct case work, it helps the EHSAS team build mental health into its work at new sites and schools. The position reports to a Clinical Psychologist.
Responsibilities
- Screen adolescents in EHSAS schools and communities for mental health concerns and plan the right interventions with the programme team.
- Provide health-based counselling and preliminary assessments for adolescents referred through Adolescent Friendly Health Clinics at Urban Primary Health Centres and hospitals.
- Demonstrate effective ways of engaging with and supporting adolescents who have mental health concerns.
- Conduct parenting modules and psychoeducation sessions so parents understand adolescent mental health better.
- Build the ability of parents to notice and respond to emotional and mental health concerns in their children.
- Build the ability of teachers, health-post staff and ICDS staff to identify adolescents who need support.
- Build the ability of programme staff to run sessions on emotional resilience, stress management and mental health.
- Coordinate capacity-building workshops for Non-Specialist Mental Health Workers.
- Supervise counselling sessions run by Non-Specialist Mental Health Workers and give them feedback that strengthens the next session.
- Provide ongoing guidance and technical support to Non-Specialist Mental Health Workers handling adolescent mental health concerns.
- Maintain case records, assessment documentation and required formats while keeping information confidential.
- Take part in peer supervision and capacity-building sessions with other Clinical Psychologists, and support the EHSAS team in starting mental health work at new sites and schools.
Requirements
- Postgraduate degree in Counselling or Clinical Psychology
- 1 to 2 years of experience in school counselling preferred, freshers can also apply
- Willingness to travel within Mumbai and Navi Mumbai
- Ability to work independently with strong self monitoring and accountability
- Flexibility and adaptability in managing time and field requirements
- Strong interpersonal, facilitation, and communication skills
- Sensitivity and empathy while working with adolescents and families
- Understanding of adolescent health and mental health policies
- Fluency in English, Hindi, and Marathi
