ATREE
ATREE is a research organisation in India that works toward a future where caring for the environment goes hand in hand with fairness for people. Its researchers study land, water, forests and wildlife, and share what they learn with communities, governments and partners so it can shape real decisions. This role sits within ATREE's Grasslands Initiative (TGI), which works to get India's grasslands and other open natural ecosystems recognised, protected, restored and well managed across large landscapes, while protecting local livelihoods and the rights of the communities who live there.
Role
As a Research Associate, you will help TGI build the knowledge it needs to restore grasslands in Rajasthan and support the people who depend on them. Your work will connect ecology, livelihoods and policy. You will read and summarise research, analyse data, record what happens in the field, and turn your findings into clear guidance for restoration work, programme design and conversations with government.
Responsibilities
- Review and summarise research on grasslands, restoration, pastoralism, fodder systems, biodiversity and climate resilience.
- Support field studies and landscape assessments, and document conservation and restoration work on the ground.
- Collect, organise and analyse ecological, social, economic and spatial data.
- Help build research frameworks, indicators and monitoring methods for TGI's landscape work.
- Review government policies, programmes and funding schemes linked to grasslands.
- Prepare research reports, policy briefs, presentations and other learning materials.
- Coordinate with research institutions, field partners and other stakeholders on shared research.
Requirements
- A Master's degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Geography, Environmental Economics, Development Studies or a related subject.
- Up to 2 years of relevant work experience after your Master's degree, and fresh graduates with strong research skills are encouraged to apply.
- Familiarity with qualitative or quantitative research methods and data analysis.
- Strong analytical, writing and communication skills.
- Knowledge of GIS tools or statistical software such as R, Python or Stata is a plus.
- Interest in grasslands, restoration ecology, pastoral livelihoods, environmental policy or rural development.
- Willingness to travel to field sites in Rajasthan and to work in a team of people from different fields.
- This role is open to Indian nationals only.
Benefits
- Gain hands-on field experience in grassland landscapes alongside local communities.
- Work in a team that brings together ecology, livelihoods and policy.
- See your research shape restoration work and policy discussions on India's grasslands.
- Build research, data and writing skills at an established environmental research organisation.
