Think Equal

Think Equal works to make social and emotional learning a normal part of every young child's day. It builds ready to use lesson materials and teacher training that help children learn kindness, empathy, and how to understand their own feelings from the earliest years. The organisation partners with governments so this learning reaches public early childhood systems rather than a handful of schools. In India, this includes a partnership with the Meghalaya Early Childhood Development Mission (MECDM) to bring the programme into 6,188 Anganwadi Centres in phases. This role sits within Think Equal's India programme team, which manages government partnerships and day to day delivery on the ground.

Role

The State Manager leads Think Equal's daily contribution to the Meghalaya partnership, working side by side with MECDM and other government counterparts. You will hold together the moving parts of delivery: training, translation, printing and distribution of materials, monitoring, budgeting and reporting. Much of the work is about building strong working relationships with government teams at state, district and block level, and making sure the programme can keep running through Meghalaya's own early childhood structures long after the initial rollout.

Responsibilities

• Manage, guide and support two Meghalaya Programme Coordinators, setting clear priorities and reviewing progress regularly.
• Serve as Think Equal's main day to day contact for MECDM officials, District Programme Managers, CDPOs, Supervisors and other government counterparts.
• Align Think Equal's activities with existing government priorities, systems, calendars and review mechanisms alongside MECDM and ICDS teams.
• Support the India Country Manager in senior government engagement and represent Think Equal at state, district and block-level meetings.
• Coordinate with Think Equal's programme, operations, finance, communications and business development teams, and with implementing partners, consultants and vendors.
• Develop and maintain phased workplans, training schedules and implementation dashboards jointly with government counterparts.
• Coordinate orientations and training for government officials, Master Trainers, District Programme Managers, Supervisors, ECD Fellows and Anganwadi Workers.
• Oversee the translation, quality checks, printing, storage and phased distribution of programme materials in Khasi, Garo and English.
• Support Programme Coordinators and government counterparts to keep delivery consistent and high quality across participating Anganwadi Centres.
• Build practical monitoring arrangements with MECDM using existing government reporting, supervision and review structures, and help fold Think Equal's indicators into MECDM and ICDS systems.
• Manage the programme budget, track expenditure and prepare financial reporting in line with organisational and donor requirements.
• Provide regular programme updates for donor, management and Board reporting, and document learning that supports continued delivery and future planning.

Requirements

• At least 7 years of relevant experience in education, early childhood development, or other social-sector programmes.
• Experience working closely with government departments and with state, district and block-level systems.
• Experience coordinating implementation across several districts, including teams, budgets, vendors and programme reporting.
• Strong project management skills.
• Strong problem-solving and facilitation skills.
• Strong relationship-building skills with a wide range of stakeholders.
• Excellent written and spoken English.
• Based in Meghalaya or willing to relocate there.
• Able to travel regularly across the state to support training, implementation and monitoring.
• Experience with ICDS, Anganwadi systems, MECDM or early childhood programmes is desirable.
• Proficiency in Khasi and Garo is desirable.
• Familiarity with social and emotional learning or with government-led systems strengthening is desirable.

Benefits

• A 12-month contract as an independent contractor under a consultancy agreement, with the possibility of extension subject to performance, funding and programme requirements.
• A consultancy fee of USD 1,400 - 1,600 per month.
• A level of effort of around 40 hours per week.
• Direct work with a state government mission on a programme reaching 6,188 Anganwadi Centres.
• Line management of two Programme Coordinators, with the India Country Manager as project lead.
