Hasiru Dala
Hasiru Dala is a not-for-profit organisation working to advance social justice for waste pickers across India. They work directly with communities on identity rights, education, healthcare, housing, pensions, skill development, and employment. They advocate for a people-first approach to waste management and work alongside local governments, citizens, volunteers, and businesses committed to sustainability and a circular economy. Buguri is Hasiru Dala's community-based learning initiative for children from waste picker families. It creates safe, engaging spaces for reading, learning, and personal growth helping children build foundational skills, stay connected to education, and explore opportunities beyond their immediate surroundings.
Role
Hasiru Dala is looking for a Librarian to run the Buguri library space and engage children through reading, creative activities, and skill-building sessions. You will work closely with children, parents, and community members to make the library a welcoming place for learning and growth.
Responsibilities
- Plan and run age-appropriate activities including reading sessions, storytelling, arts, crafts, games, awareness sessions, and exposure visits
- Facilitate at least 5–6 library sessions per week to encourage regular participation and creativity
- Organise workshops on basic life skills, creative arts, and learning support for out-of-school children
- Build relationships with parents and community members and conduct awareness and training sessions
- Track school attendance, support enrolment, and connect children to hostels, scholarships, and other support services
- Keep accurate records of attendance, sessions, and book usage and submit monthly program and financial reports
- Coordinate with and support nearby libraries in the same region when needed
- Participate in staff trainings, review meetings, and team learning sessions
- Keep the library space organised, child-friendly, and ensure books are well-categorised and regularly rotated
- Orient and guide volunteers and interns during their visits
- Ensure the library is a safe and inclusive space and report any child protection concerns promptly
Requirements
- Graduate in any discipline; background in education, social work, or library science is an advantage
- Experience working with children, especially from marginalised communities
- Comfortable conducting group sessions, workshops, and community engagement activities
- Basic record-keeping and reporting skills
- Warm, patient, and able to build trust with children and families
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Languages: Kannada and English required
