About

Lakshya Jeevan Jagriti is an Indian nonprofit working with marginalised children, adolescents and youth. It defines empowerment as the expansion of choice and the strengthening of voice through a transformation of power relations, so that young people gain more control over their own lives and futures. Its stated purpose is to give every individual a safe space where they can be nurtured, express fully and learn, and for children and youth to become self-aware, deeply empathetic and responsible citizens of India.

Major Areas of Work

  • Youth leadership: Building value-based leadership among adolescents and young people so they can act on issues in their own communities.

  • Career and livelihoods: Preparing young people from low-income backgrounds for employment through skilling and career guidance.

  • Health and hygiene: Working with children and youth on health awareness and hygiene practices as a matter of informed personal choice.

  • Women and girls: Skilling and empowerment work aimed at women and adolescent girls in underserved neighbourhoods.

  • Slum and community outreach: Sustained presence in urban slum settlements, engaging families and wider community members alongside the young people it works with.

Major Initiatives and Programmes

  • Equity in Career: Career readiness work that helps young people from marginalised backgrounds access employment and further study.

  • Choice in Health & Hygiene: Health and hygiene programming for children and adolescents, built around informed decision-making rather than instruction.

  • Aao Saath Maa: The organisation's women empowerment programme, working with mothers and women in the communities it serves.

  • Voice to Lead: Leadership development for adolescents and youth, focused on helping them articulate their own voice and lead change locally.

  • GDA (General Duty Assistant) Course: A vocational healthcare training course that prepares candidates for General Duty Assistant roles in hospitals and care settings.

Impact

Lakshya Jeevan Jagriti states on its own site that it has impacted 50,089 youth and children, skilled 20,005 women and girls, and reached 30,000 community members, with outreach across 10 slum settlements.

Working here means direct, sustained contact with children, adolescents and women in urban slum communities rather than programme delivery at a distance. The work spans leadership development, vocational skilling, health awareness and women's empowerment, so staff get exposure to several sides of grassroots community development at once. It suits people who want field-level engagement in a small organisation, who are comfortable working in Hindi with low-income urban communities, and who are drawn to work built around helping young people find their own voice rather than delivering a fixed curriculum.
