SaveLIFE Foundation

SaveLIFE Foundation is an independent nonprofit organisation dedicated to improving road safety and emergency trauma care in India. Founded in 2008 by Piyush Tewari, the organisation works to reduce preventable road crash fatalities through evidence-based policy advocacy, safer road infrastructure, stronger emergency response systems and public awareness. With a vision of saving one million lives by 2030, SaveLIFE Foundation addresses road safety as both a public health and development challenge.

The organisation partners with the Government of India, state governments, law enforcement agencies, healthcare institutions, multilateral organisations and private sector partners to build safer transportation systems. By combining research, engineering, policy reform and capacity building, SaveLIFE Foundation develops scalable solutions that improve road safety and strengthen trauma care across the country. Major Areas of Work

  • Road Safety Policy & Advocacy: SaveLIFE Foundation works with national and state governments to strengthen road safety legislation, regulatory frameworks and institutional capacity. Through research and policy recommendations, the organisation supports evidence-based reforms that improve accountability and create safer road systems.

  • Road Infrastructure Safety: The organisation conducts road safety assessments, crash investigations and infrastructure audits to identify hazardous locations and recommend engineering improvements. These interventions help reduce road crashes and improve the safety of highways, urban roads and transport corridors.

  • Emergency Trauma Care: SaveLIFE Foundation strengthens emergency medical response systems by improving trauma care protocols, developing emergency response networks and training first responders. Its work focuses on ensuring that road crash victims receive timely and quality medical assistance.

  • Research & Data Analytics: The organisation generates evidence through crash investigations, behavioural studies and road safety research to identify systemic risks and guide policy decisions. Data-driven insights are used to improve infrastructure planning, enforcement strategies and public health interventions.

  • Capacity Building & Training: SaveLIFE Foundation equips police personnel, emergency responders, commercial drivers, government officials and healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills required to improve road safety and trauma care through structured training programmes.

  • Public Awareness & Behaviour Change: The organisation designs campaigns and community engagement initiatives that promote responsible road user behaviour, increase awareness of road safety risks and encourage safer mobility practices across India.

Major Initiatives & Programmes

  • Zero Fatality Corridor Programme: A flagship initiative that transforms high-risk highways into safer transport corridors through engineering improvements, better enforcement, emergency response systems and public awareness interventions.

  • Zero Fatality District Programme: Works with district administrations to establish integrated road safety systems by strengthening governance, institutional coordination, crash prevention measures and emergency response capabilities.

  • Good Samaritan Law Advocacy: Led the nationwide advocacy efforts that resulted in India's Good Samaritan Law, protecting citizens who voluntarily assist road crash victims from legal and procedural harassment.

  • Crash Investigation Programme: Conducts scientific crash investigations to identify the root causes of accidents and recommend engineering, enforcement and policy solutions that reduce future road fatalities.

  • First Responder & Trauma Care Training: Trains police personnel, ambulance staff, commercial drivers and emergency responders in life-saving trauma care and emergency response techniques to improve survival outcomes after road crashes.

Impact

Over the past 15+ years, SaveLIFE Foundation has played a key role in strengthening road safety in India by contributing to the Good Samaritan Law and the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019. Its Zero Fatality programmes have reduced road crash deaths by up to 58% on major highways, while its training initiatives have equipped over 46,000 police personnel, first responders and commercial drivers with life-saving road safety and trauma care skills.
