iLAB - Innovation Laboratory

iLAB is a non-profit organisation dedicated to building resilience, skills, and opportunity within Kerala's coastal communities. Founded in 2016, the organisation works alongside children, young people, and women in fishing and coastal settlements, focusing on education, digital literacy, livelihood generation, and community leadership. The organisation is rooted in the belief that lasting change must come from within communities, and that every individual, regardless of background, deserves access to dignified work and quality learning.
Headquarters: Kerala, India . Focus Areas: Education, Livelihoods, Digital Literacy, Women's Empowerment, Community Leadership
iLAB operates at the community level, running programmes that directly serve children, youth, and women in coastal Kerala. The approach is rooted in listening first -- conducting home visits, engaging local leaders, and understanding what communities actually need before designing interventions. Programmes are delivered through neighbourhood learning hubs, a Skill Hub, and community ambassador networks, combining academic support with life skills, vocational training, and mentorship.
The organisation's work is grounded in four values: putting community first, ensuring inclusion, building skills for independence, and focusing on long-term change rather than short-term fixes.
Programmes and Initiatives
- Coastal Education Enhancement Mission (CEEM) Runs neighbourhood learning hubs offering daily sessions for children across age groups, from early schoolers to teens preparing for SSLC exams. Sessions combine academic support with theatre, creative activities, social-emotional learning, and career guidance. Over 2,175 students have been reached so far.
- Coastal Livelihood Acceleration Program (CLAP) Supports women to build economic independence through life skills workshops, self-help groups, and hands-on vocational training such as eco-friendly product making and embroidery. Women are also connected to the Skill Hub for digital tools and mentorship. Over 75 women have been equipped to start and grow their own enterprises.
- Digital Tech Literacy Program (DTLP) Bridges the digital divide for coastal youth through practical training in computers, internet tools, and basic design at the Skill Hub. Participants are also introduced to freelancing and digital career pathways. Over 50 youth have been trained so far.
- CADET (Community Ambassadors Development and Empowerment Training) Trains local youth and volunteers to become community ambassadors through leadership workshops and team-based activities. Graduates go on to mentor children, support women's groups, and lead neighbourhood initiatives. Over 35 community fellows are currently active.
- Skill Hub A physical training space where youth and women access hands-on learning in technology, crafts, and small business management, serving as the infrastructure backbone for both DTLP and CLAP.
iLAB is a grassroots organisation with a very clear sense of who it serves and why. The work is deeply community-embedded team members spend real time in coastal neighbourhoods, build relationships with families across generations, and see the direct impact of their programmes in children's exam results, women's enterprises, and young people stepping into leadership roles.
