Room to Read

Room to Read was set up in 2003 and works today in twelve states: Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Telangana, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. The organisation works to change the lives of millions of children through reading and writing skills in the early grades, and through gender equality in education. It works with government school systems so that changes reach children at scale and last beyond a single project. roomtoread.jpeg

Role

The Officer, Learning and Innovations works closely with the Director, Research, Monitoring and Evaluation, and with teams at both national and state level. The work is to gather learning from how programmes are actually run on the ground, to trace what knowledge passes between the organisation and government systems, and to turn all of that into clear reports, briefs and presentations that colleagues, funders and partners can use. It also involves bringing in outside research and new ideas, and carrying learning outward through conferences, exposure visits and other sharing events.

Responsibilities

  • Plan learning studies and knowledge products, and coordinate with national teams, state teams and outside agencies so outputs arrive on time.
  • Capture programme processes, new practices and key learning from Room to Read's work using qualitative research, field visits and detailed conversations with stakeholders.
  • Work with state, programme, research and communications teams so learning work runs smoothly across functions.
  • Produce clear knowledge products that explain Room to Read's approach and its on-ground and systems-level work, including technical reports, policy briefs and presentations.
  • Follow current Indian and global research on foundational literacy reform and share it with colleagues through a reading database, discussions, newsletters and occasional blog posts.
  • Conduct secondary research and pull together findings from existing evaluations and assessments.
  • Answer key learning questions raised within the organisation.
  • Build presentations for strategic reviews, leadership meetings and conversations with funders.
  • Build and maintain a knowledge repository and knowledge hub covering areas such as language teaching and learning, scaling pathways, systems reform, girls' education and life skills.
  • Curate and take part in networking and knowledge-sharing events, carrying insights from Room to Read's work into the wider education ecosystem.
  • Take on other responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in education, social sciences, social work or development studies, or an equivalent qualification from a well-regarded institution.
  • 4 to 8 years of relevant work experience.
  • An entrepreneurial, results-driven approach and a track record of achieving results.
  • Familiarity with programmes and organisations working on early-grade reading, literacy and gender, in India and elsewhere.
  • Proven ability to carry out qualitative research, interpret and analyse it, and turn it into clear presentations and learning briefs.
  • Ability to shape learning insights so they fit the decisions the organisation needs to make.
  • Strong spoken and written English.
  • Working knowledge of a language spoken in the states where Room to Read works, such as Hindi or Telugu, is a plus.
  • Strong people skills and the ability to work well with a wide range of colleagues and outside stakeholders.
  • Willingness to share knowledge, mentor colleagues, present, and review peers' work.
  • Training or knowledge in linguistics is an added advantage.
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Comfort with field visits and stakeholder consultations.
  • Based in or able to move to New Delhi.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary.
  • Thirteenth-month bonus.
  • Health insurance.
  • Retirement plan.
  • Work at national and state level with programme, research and communications teams, and with government systems.
  • Chance to present at conferences and workshops and build a public body of written work.
  • Part of an organisation working on literacy and gender equality in education for millions of children.
