This role sits within UNDP's Plastic Waste Management Programme, which works to cut plastic pollution in India while improving the recognition, safety and earnings of the waste pickers, known as safai saathis, who make recycling possible.

Role

The Project Analyst, Gender and Social Inclusion will make sure that gender equality and social inclusion are built into UNDP's waste, chemicals and circular economy work rather than added at the end. The focus is on informal waste workers, especially women: better livelihoods, safer working conditions and real access to social protection. The role works closely with government bodies, urban local bodies, private companies and civil society groups so that programmes are designed, delivered and measured in a way that includes the people most affected, building on lessons from Project Utthaan and similar efforts.

Responsibilities

• Lead the inclusion of gender equality and social inclusion across project design, planning and delivery, using established frameworks and tools.
• Coordinate social inclusion work for informal waste workers, covering social protection, occupational safety, financial inclusion and sustainable livelihoods.
• Analyse project components and field-level problems to spot where women and other groups are being left out, and help build practical solutions for those gaps.
• Provide technical support and coordination across project locations so activities are delivered on time and to a consistent standard.
• Resolve day-to-day implementation issues and keep field teams and the central project team connected.
• Build and maintain working relationships with government counterparts, urban local bodies, civil society organisations and private sector partners.
• Connect the project with relevant government schemes and policies so services reach workers through existing systems.
• Support coordination with vendors and service providers, including technical input into procurement and partnership processes.
• Develop inclusion-focused indicators within project results frameworks and annual work plans.
• Contribute to baseline studies, data collection and periodic reviews that track progress and shape decisions.
• Compile and analyse both numbers and interview-based evidence to produce clear insights on inclusion outcomes.
• Write and contribute to project reports, donor updates and knowledge products such as case studies, guidelines and training material.

Requirements

• An advanced university degree, a master's or equivalent, in Gender Studies, Development Studies, Public Policy, Social Sciences or a related field.
• Candidates with a master's degree in a relevant field are not required to have prior professional work experience.
• Candidates with a bachelor's degree need at least 2 years of relevant professional experience in gender equality, social inclusion, livelihoods, informal sector integration, social protection or similar development programmes.
• Proven ability to coordinate with government agencies, civil society organisations and community-based partners.
• Fluency in English and Hindi.
• Experience in waste management, circular economy, urban livelihoods or other labour-intensive sectors, with exposure to informal or vulnerable worker groups.
• Familiarity with social protection, occupational safety and worker welfare frameworks.
• Experience supporting policy analysis or advisory work on inclusion or labour issues.
• Experience in programme implementation, monitoring, reporting and analytical writing.
• Prior experience working with grassroots and field-based partners in UN agencies, NGOs, INGOs, donor-funded projects or similar development institutions.
• Ability to see how one part of a system affects the rest, and to use that judgement in solving problems.
• Clear written and spoken communication, with the ability to adjust the message to different audiences.
• Ability to gather and weigh evidence and draw sound conclusions from it.
• Willingness to work with difference, question one's own assumptions and address discrimination when it appears.
• No travel outside the duty station is required for this position.
