ATREE

ATREE is an environmental research organisation based in Bengaluru that works to protect nature and the people who depend on it. India's grasslands and other open natural ecosystems are home to many plants and animals, and they support the livelihoods of herders and farming communities. ATREE brings together ecology, livelihoods and policy to help care for these landscapes in ways that are fair to the people who live there. This role sits within ATREE's Grasslands Initiative (TGI), which works across priority grassland regions to get these ecosystems recognised, protected, restored and well managed, while securing the rights and livelihoods of local communities.

Role

As a Research Associate, you will help build the research and knowledge behind TGI's work, where ecology, livelihoods and policy meet. You will review studies, analyse data and record what is happening in the field, then turn what you learn into practical ideas that guide restoration, shape programmes and inform policy.

Responsibilities

  • Review and summarise research on grasslands, restoration, pastoralism, fodder systems, biodiversity and climate resilience.
  • Support field studies and landscape assessments, and document conservation and restoration work on the ground.
  • Collect, organise and analyse ecological, social, economic and spatial data.
  • Help develop research frameworks, indicators and ways to monitor TGI's work across landscapes.
  • Review government policies, programmes and sources of funding that affect grasslands.
  • Prepare research reports, policy briefs, presentations and other materials that share what the team learns.
  • Coordinate with research institutions, field partners and others to carry out research together.

Requirements

  • A Master's degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Geography, Environmental Economics, Development Studies or a related subject.
  • 0-2 years of relevant experience after your Master's degree, and fresh graduates with strong research skills are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong analytical, writing and communication skills, with a working knowledge of qualitative or quantitative research methods and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of GIS tools or statistical software such as R, Python or Stata is a plus.
  • A real interest in grasslands, restoration ecology, pastoral livelihoods, environmental policy or rural development.
  • Willingness to travel to field sites and to work in a team of people from different fields.
  • This position is open to Indian candidates only.

Benefits

  • Work alongside a team that brings together ecology, livelihoods and policy.
  • Gain hands-on field experience in grassland landscapes across India.
  • See your research shape restoration work, programmes and policy.
  • Build a strong research base early in your career.
