iTeach Schools

The quality of school education available to students from low-income communities across India is very poor, and their chances of finishing college or building a career are far lower than those of their better-off peers. iTeach Schools was started in 2015 to change that and to create a level playing field for all children. It runs free, high-impact schools and a college-to-career programme for the most disadvantaged students in Pune and Navi Mumbai. The organisation is known for its professional development, its result-oriented team culture, and school design that puts students at the centre. This role sits within iTeach's school team in Navi Mumbai, which works directly with students, their families and the neighbourhoods they come from. iteach-nmmc-english-medium-primary-and-secondary-school-nerul-navi-mumbai-schools-2d878necb9.jpg

Role

The School Social Worker makes sure students get the fullest possible support from everyone outside the school walls: parents, community members, medical professionals and government officials. The work has three parts. Student welfare, which means tracking attendance and solving the problems that keep a child out of class. Parent engagement, which means building real ties with families and giving them a voice in the school. Community development, which means finding resources in the neighbourhood that make learning better. The focus is on the students who struggle most, the ones who will not succeed in school unless the adults around them are fully involved.

Responsibilities

  • Understand the community profile and orient teachers about the community and the parents they work with.
  • Collect complete student and parent information at the time of admission.
  • Identify, monitor and track issues linked to student attendance, punctuality and retention, and solve them through regular home visits.
  • Provide intensive support to students who are struggling, by drawing in the stakeholders who can help.
  • Ensure students receive the services they need outside school, including medical check-ups, caste and income certificates, scholarships and learning disability testing.
  • Conduct socio-emotional learning classes in school.
  • Plan the parent engagement strategy together with the School Leader and put it into practice through meetings and workshops.
  • Use parent meetings to build trust with families and find solutions to challenges in their lives and in the community.
  • Form the School Management Committee and facilitate its regular meetings and projects.
  • Build a group of parent volunteers who help with school operations.
  • Identify and secure resources from the community that improve the learning experience, such as after-school study space, a playground or a library.
  • Act as the bridge between the community and the school, and build relations with corporators and local influencers.

Requirements

  • MSW with a specialisation in Medical and Psychiatric Social Work or Family and Child Welfare.
  • Strong academic grades through the MSW programme.
  • Very strong on-the-ground projects completed during the MSW.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working with underprivileged populations.
  • Experience working directly with young people aged 14 to 18 is preferred.
  • Willingness to make regular home visits in the communities the school serves.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of people, including parents, doctors, government officials and local leaders.
  • Comfort with running group sessions, such as socio-emotional learning classes and parent workshops.
  • Ability to keep accurate records of student and family information and follow up consistently.
  • Patience and persistence with students and families who need repeated support.
  • Strong communication skills in the local language of the community.
  • Willingness to be based in Navi Mumbai and work across the Nerul and Turbhe campuses.

Benefits

  • Monthly compensation of ₹36,000 to ₹40,000 CTC, set in line with education and work experience.
  • Provident fund and gratuity.
  • Medical insurance of up to ₹3 lakh per year.
  • Paid leaves.
  • Annual increments and opportunities for promotion.
  • World-class professional development and a result-oriented team culture.
