PETA India works to stop cruelty to animals and to help animals who are hurt, sick or in danger. The team answers calls from the public about animals in trouble, arranges rescues, and follows up on cruelty cases with the police and government agencies. It also speaks up for animals in public life, so that laws and everyday habits treat them better. Much of this work depends on a small group of people who pick up the phone at any hour and get help moving quickly. This role sits within PETA India's emergency response team, which handles urgent animal emergencies, rescues and cruelty cases across the country.

Role

The Emergency Response Assistant is often the first person an animal in trouble reaches, through a call or an e-mail. You will judge what each case needs, arrange hands-on help for animals in Mumbai and Delhi, and work with rescuers, volunteers, veterinarians, police and government officials to get help to animals in far-off places too. You will also keep careful records of every case, from the first call to how it ended, so the team learns from each one.

Responsibilities

• Respond promptly and appropriately to emergency and general cruelty-case calls and e-mails.
• Handle related issues, such as housing societies wrongly restricting animal feeders and caretakers, using form letters and other approved means.
• Arrange timely, hands-on help for animals in need in Mumbai and Delhi with the senior paravet and office assistants, following PETA's standard operating procedures and in consultation with the relevant supervisor.
• Coordinate with approved animal-protection organisations, volunteers, activists, government bodies and designated officials to make emergency rescues possible in remote areas across the country.
• File police complaints and First Information Reports, and visit relevant agencies and case sites when needed.
• Inform members of the public about ways they can help animals, with responses suited to each case.
• Maintain and update a database of contacts and services available to the emergency and cruelty-case response team, as requested by the supervisor.
• Keep thorough records of calls and e-mails about emergencies and cruelty cases, including how each one was handled and concluded.
• Take part in professional development training on animal handling, restraining, first aid and other lessons relevant to emergency and cruelty-case response.
• Provide other services related to the emergency and cruelty-case response system, as directed by the supervisor.
• Represent PETA India professionally to the public, organisations, volunteers, veterinarians, government agencies and the police.
• Carry out any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

• Minimum of a bachelor's degree from a recognised institution.
• Voluntary or other experience handling emergency and cruelty-case responses for animals is a plus.
• Computer proficiency.
• Fluency in Hindi and English.
• Knowledge of other local Indian languages is a plus.
• Exceptional organisational and time-management skills, including multi-tasking.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Patience in dealing with animal-protection organisations, volunteers and other contacts.
• Passion for ending cruelty to animals and helping animals in need.
• Compassionate, responsible and self-driven character.
• Outgoing and personable manner.
• Adherence to a vegan lifestyle.
• Ability and willingness to travel independently as needed to handle emergency and cruelty cases.
• Willingness to work a roster-based schedule covering morning, evening, night and weekend shifts, with two rotational weekly offs.
