The India Country Office (ICO) is central to the Foundation's commitment to advancing its key goals in India, with the Digital Innovation & AI team serving as a core enabler across the portfolio, focused on ethical and responsible Digital Innovation & AI adoption in health, gender, and poverty reduction. This role sits within the Foundation's mission to use AI to reduce the digital gap, identifying AI's untapped potential for health and rigorously testing early-stage ideas before handing proven concepts to the scaling team.

Role

The Senior Officer, AI Innovation (Health) sits at the intersection of technical innovation and health impact, identifying early-stage AI bets relevant to India's health priorities and rapidly prototyping and proof-of-concept testing them for relevance and feasibility. This highly collaborative role involves close engagement with Program Strategy Teams, government counterparts, and a broad set of innovation ecosystem stakeholders, including the private sector across India, reporting to the Deputy Director, Digital Innovation & AI, ICO.

Responsibilities

• Continuously scan the global and Indian AI landscape for relevance to health priorities, including medical imaging, diagnostics, and edge-deployable hardware
• Identify and prioritize early-stage AI innovations addressing unmet needs in maternal, newborn, child, and nutrition health (MNCNH), diagnostics, and connected care
• Build and maintain a live pipeline of candidate "bets," assessing clinical relevance, technical maturity, and strategic fit
• Design and run lightweight proof-of-concept pilots testing new AI ideas' clinical relevance quickly and at low cost
• Translate promising research into testable prototypes, working with clinical experts, technical teams, and external innovators
• Engage with ecosystem partners across academia, clinical research institutions, industry, and civil society to frame problems and match solutions
• Build relationships with startups, research labs, and academic medical centers (e.g. IITs, IISc, AIIMS) to surface new ideas
• Partner with the Measurement, Learning and Evaluation (MLE) team to evaluate prototypes against health-specific benchmarks
• Package validated concepts into clear handover materials for the AI Applied scaling sub-team, with explicit go/no-go recommendations
• Share emerging AI trends and prototype learnings to enhance collective AI literacy across the Foundation

Requirements

• 10+ years of relevant experience combining clinical or biomedical grounding with technical depth in AI
• MD/MBBS, clinical/biomedical degree, or equivalent, combined with training/experience in biomedical informatics or data science
• Experience at the intersection of clinical practice or biomedical research and AI/ML, with exposure to clinical workflows in low-resource settings
• Hands-on familiarity with health AI applications such as medical imaging, diagnostic algorithms, and clinical decision support tools
• Track record of academic, peer-reviewed, or applied research work in AI for health
• Demonstrated prototyping mindset, energized by early-stage experimentation rather than long-cycle program management
• Strong collaborative mindset and clean handoff experience with downstream teams
• Ability to clearly articulate technical and clinical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
• Ability to travel up to 30% of time domestically and internationally
