About

Bhumi was founded on August 15, 2006, by a group of friends who believed every underprivileged child deserves quality education. It has since grown into one of India's largest youth volunteering movements, channelling the energy of young volunteers into direct, structured educational and community work with underserved children. bhumi (1).png Bhumi's core belief is that education, delivered consistently and with care, is the strongest lever against poverty. Its model runs on volunteer-led engagement: young people give their time to teach, mentor, and support children both inside low-income schools and beyond them, in shelter homes and communities, turning volunteering into a long-term pathway toward "an educated, poverty-free India."

Major Areas of Work

  • In-School Education: Working directly inside low-income schools to improve the learning experience from the ground up, addressing gaps in materials, teaching quality, and infrastructure.

  • Beyond-School Support: Extending educational and holistic development support to children in shelter homes and communities, recognising that learning outcomes are shaped by life outside the classroom too.

  • Youth Leadership Development: Running the Bhumi Fellowship, a two-year intensive programme placing young leaders directly inside schools to drive change from within, alongside city-based youth clubs that power local civic and social action.

  • Corporate & Individual Partnerships: Engaging corporates through structured CSR volunteering programmes and individual donors to fund and staff its education and community work.

Major Initiatives & Programmes

  • Bhumi Fellowship: A two-year, full-time leadership programme placing passionate young people directly inside schools to lead transformation from within.

  • Youth Clubs: City-based clubs across 15+ cities that give young people an ongoing platform for civic and social engagement beyond one-off volunteering.

  • Bhumi Care: An internal initiative focused on the physical, emotional, and professional wellbeing of Bhumi's employees, volunteers, and the children it serves.

  • Corporate Volunteering Programmes: Structured CSR partnerships that channel corporate employee volunteering into Bhumi's education and community initiatives.

Impact

  • 100,000+ volunteers engaged across its 19-year history
  • 70,000+ children reached every year through its education and community programmes
  • Active across 15+ cities in India
  • Two decades of continuous operation since its founding in 2006, reflecting sustained organisational stability and reach

Bhumi suits people who want to build and manage large-scale volunteer movements rather than just deliver programmes directly. Its scale (100,000+ volunteers, 70,000+ children reached annually) means staff get exposure to the operational and people-management side of running one of India's biggest youth engagement platforms. It also appeals to people energised by youth leadership development, since programmes like the Fellowship are as much about building young leaders as they are about reaching children.

Bhumi suits people passionate about education and youth engagement who want to work at the intersection of volunteer mobilisation, school-level programme delivery, and leadership development, rather than a narrowly clinical or policy-focused role.
