Nirmaan Organization

Nirmaan Organization is a BITS Pilani alumni-led NGO founded in 2005. It works towards a society where every individual, regardless of background, is empowered to thrive with equality, opportunity and compassion. Its stated vision is to achieve a knowledge driven and economically empowered society, and its mission is to promote grassroots social innovations, volunteering spirit, active citizenship and social leadership among the youth of the nation. The organisation runs programmes across education, skill development and entrepreneurship, health and well-being, rural and community development, environmental sustainability, and disaster relief. It is certified as a Great Place to Work.

Major Areas of Work

• Education: School transformation, digital and STEM infrastructure, career guidance, scholarships and sports for students in government and low-income schools.

• Economic Empowerment: Employability training, vocational training and job placement for youth, women and other under-represented groups.

• Health and Well-being: Community health programmes and infrastructure support to government hospitals.

• Environment and Sustainability: Lake cleaning and restoration, sustainable agriculture, plantations and kitchen gardens, and solid waste management.

• Rural and Community Development: Village adoption, disaster relief and rehabilitation, and inclusion programmes for persons with disabilities, orphans, the elderly and LGBTQ+ communities.

Major Initiatives and Programmes

• School Transformation Program: Improves government and low-income school environments through infrastructure, learning support and teacher engagement.

• Digital Labs and Coding Program: Sets up computer labs in schools where students learn tools such as Excel, HTML and Scratch with a teacher's guidance, alongside a Digital Classroom Program and STEM Labs/Robotics Program.

• Youth Employment Program: Trains youth at skill centres in technical tracks such as Java full stack development along with soft skills, leading into placement.

• Swasha (Swayam Shakti): Supports women, persons with disabilities and LGBTQ+ community members to become entrepreneurs.

• Village Adoption Program: Takes on whole villages for integrated rural development work spanning education, health, livelihoods and environment.

Nirmaan also runs Women Vocational Training, Women in Technology, Impact Hiring, a PwDs Skilling Program, an LGBTQ+ Skilling and Entrepreneurship Development Program, a Scholarship and Mentorship Program, and a Tech and AI for Good stream.

Swasha is the organisation's inclusion-focused entrepreneurship platform. Rather than stopping at training, it works with women, persons with disabilities and LGBTQ+ participants to set them up as independent entrepreneurs, which connects the skilling programmes to a livelihood outcome the participant owns.

Impact

Nirmaan states it has impacted over 6 million beneficiaries across 26 states and union territories in India, driven by more than 750 employees and supported by over 12,000 individual volunteers, and its own site cites engagement with 250+ corporate champions, including partnerships with ADP, AMD, Bosch, Broadridge, Carrier, Chubb, Colruyt, EPAM, IBM, NTT Data, Qualcomm, S&P, State Street, Synchrony, Savills, Demandbase, IKS Health and the Neuland Foundation.

Working at Nirmaan suits someone who wants breadth. The programme portfolio spans classroom infrastructure, employability training, public health, environment, rural development and disaster response, so staff see how several development levers interact rather than specialising in one. The corporate partner base means exposure to CSR-funded delivery at scale, and the volunteer and student chapter network means most roles involve mobilising people as well as running programmes. There is also a technology team building digital tools in-house, which takes interns and converts them to full-time roles.
